In order to create a successful business you need one very important thing.
Focus
It sounds like it should be simple right?
You put your focus on what you want and BOOM! Done.
It may sound easy but to many it can be one of the hardest things to do.
Focus is complicated by thousandsΒ of years of nature. Weβve been conditioned to react. Itβs stamped into our very DNA.
Survival instincts = multitasking
Our ancestors survived by reacting. They were always on high alert, using all their senses at once to make sure they stayed safe, protected and fed.
In society today we create a different kind of alert. With cell phones constantly sending notifications, emails, Facebook messages, texts etc. It never stops!
Multitasking = Pride
Thereβs a certain amount of pride in being able to keep up with everything.
Who doesn’t like to be seen with the superhuman trait of getting 5 things done at once?
But really when it comes down to it, weβre just continuing in that same primal instinct that isnβt needed anymore and with it, scattering our full potential all over the place.
Not to mention creating a whole lot ofΒ stress.
If you want to succeed today whether itβs in your business, health or life, focus is absolutely needed.
What is focus anyway?
Itβs your center of interest. Itβs what youβve set your sight and concentration on.
If you want something you need to focus.Β

To build your successful business in a smart way, this means prioritizing and focusing on the tasks needed one at a time.
Putting your head down and getting those tasks done without distraction and without checking your Facebook messages every 10 minutes.
Itβs about turning your computer and even phone off for a period of time.
That can be hard to do at first because of what we talked about earlier…
The whole ancestor programing being stamped into your cells thing! Thatβs a lot of habit!
But bottom line, if you want success to be a priority, then focus has to happen and yes, you can learn how to do it.
Remember multitasking is not focusing.
Thereβre some easy ways to learn to focus.
Meditation:
Take 1 minute to start with and just BE. Focus on your breathing and relax. Super easy!
Practice a creative activity like painting or knitting:
If youβre a hands on person you can pick an activity that requires you to concentrate on one thing. I love knitting because it sort of puts me in a zen like state. It really is a way to de-stress and relax.
The Healing Codes:
Many of you already know this is one of my favorite tools. I use it often to focus on relaxing and visualizing my outcomes. I have a very unique spin on how to use it, amping it up to create more power. Think visualizing on steroids. YESsss!
More focused visualizing equals incredible success!Β

Just BE
Basically all these things allow you to be in the moment, focusing on what is, right now. Not worrying about whatβs next or what you need to be preparing for tomorrow.
When you can focus on what needs to be done next in your business, you can get more accomplished in less time.
Yes, when you focus it actually saves you time and you avoid burnout.
So letβs pick something great to focus on first in your business and share it in the comments below.

Great reminder Melissa – I *know* I get more done if I turn off the internet and focus, but it’s so hard to do! I’m going to do more pomodoro sessions this week where I do exactly that. Thanks!
Great resources here, Melissa! I love this line – “Remember multitasking is not focusing.” With so many distractions, I do need to constantly remind myself to stay on one task and see it through before going on to the next. Life does pull us in so many different directions. Thanks for the helpful suggestions!
Thanks Cathy,
I still need reminders on my multitasking habit. It comes so naturally π
I LOVE this Melissa! I used to think of myself as the Queen of Multitasking but in reality I became the queen of mediocrity. Multitasking never allowed me to complete a task to the best it deserved. Too many distractions. Too many balls in the air. Too many of too many.
These days, I don’t multitask all that much (quitting is darn near impossible). When it comes to important stuff…I focus on the task at hand and bam…it gets done.
Yoga, martial arts, and crocheting are my three go to things to help me clear my head of my distractions.
I hear you Peggy. It is something that’s hardwired into us, right. Good for you on dialing focus in better. I’m constantly working in it and I have to say it feels much better. Thanks for stopping by π
Focus is definitely the power that takes you from living ordinarily to extraordinary. Great reminder Melissa. π
Melissa, this is SO true! Success is all in the execution of great ideas. And execution is all about focus. Thank you for REFOCUSING me on that simple fact! π
